Past updates

12/31/2011 - It's absurd that half a year managed to pass without updating my site. I'll be unveiling a completely re-designed site in 2012 and promise much more frequent and substantive updates! Until then ... Happy New year!!

07/18/2011 - Quick update to say that A Little Help is opening in theaters throughout the US on Friday of this week, July 22nd! Additional theaters will be added on subsequent fridays. Go see this absolutely wonderful film starring Jenna Fischer, Chris O'Donnell and Rob Benedict, and directed by Michael Weithorn. The soundtrack on Columbia Records comes out today, available on iTunes or on AmazonMp3.

Further I'll be conducting a choral / chamber music concert to benefit Education Through Music - Los Angeles (www.etmla.org) on July 31st at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. 100% of the proceeds will be put towards putting music in elementary schools. Tickets are available here:
http://mythosconcertetmla.eventbrite.com

06/07/2011 - Apologies for the 6 month lag in updates! This site is currently undergoing reconstruction and therefore updates have been totally absent. Hopefully the new site will be loaded soon.

Meantime A Little Help will be releasing to theaters this summer in July. The soundtrack featuring some score cues, my original song "I'm Lucky" (co-composed with, and performed by Celeigh Chapman), and original songs by Jakob Dylan, will be released by Sony Music.

More soon!

12/14/10 - First off, happy holidays and happy new year!

Many wonderful developments recently. Journey, thatgamecompany's 3rd PlayStation3 game, has recently unveiled their first official trailer. To say I've been explosively excited to share this project with the world is a gross understatement. The release is currently slated for 2011. Many more details soon to come.

Additionally, I've recently completed a fun and esoteric project with my dear friend Paul Solet (writer/director of the darkly beautiful Grace). He has created a radio drama thanks to the generosity of Glass Eye Pix and the tremendous drive of Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid. It's called The Conformation and it is available here for download. I ended up doing most all the mixing, dialogue editing and sound design work on it, in addition to my normal scoring duties (with a huge help from the incomparable Jake Hamilton, who did tons of beautiful foley work). I am especially proud of the results. The score is available for download a short soundtrack EP, which is linked in the Discography.

Many new and exciting things brewing for 2011 ... check back after New Years!

10/01/10 - The summer concluded full steam with the completion of Bob Celestino's terrific thriller / drama Leave, as well as the documentary Street Soccer directed by Michael Pickett and produced by David Quinney.

Work otherwise continues on thatgamecompany's latest title Journey, due out next year. Exciting developments to be posted later!

Also, and most importantly, my non-profit Education Through Music - LA is having its 5th anniversary fundraiser gala. We will be saluting recent Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, as well as legendary Los Angeles educator Reggie Andrews. PLEASE, if you have time, visit our site and consider donating to this cause. The Los Angeles Unified School District has just cut funding for 100% of the arts in their elementary schools, so our mission is of UTMOST importance.

Check out our silent auction (proceeds benefit ETM-LA)!! The items are AMAZING, and the auctions open to anyone.

05/22/10 - Just returned from Seattle and the world premiere of A Little Help (site update coming soon!).

Had an amazing time celebrating an amazing film! Huge thanks and congratulations to director Michael Weithorn, producers Dena Hysell and Joe Gressis, and stars Jenna Fischer, Rob Benedict, Daniel Yelsky and Chris O'Donnell. You'll be seeing this film in a theater before you know it, updates soon! I also want to specially recognize my wonderful collaborator on the film's original song: Celeigh Chapman. This was a truly special project for me from beginning to end and I am extremely excited to share it with everyone soon.

04/01/10 - The first quarter of 2010 has begun astonishingly, with over half a dozen new, very exciting projects. New films, video games and miscellaneous others have been completely dominating my time. Details and samples to come.

Meantime, another major project called "Allogamy" has been keeping me very busy. Allogamy is a 365-day (once-a-day for 2010) photo/music collaboration between me and my long-time friend Andrew Berglund. For every day of 2010 he takes a photo and I write a corresponding piece. Presented in the form of a blog, it can be followed either here or here. It is literally updated daily so check it out!

Additionally, a few weeks ago BSX Records released my score to Grace, which can be ordered here. The label will soon be also releasing my score to the vampire action film Live Evil.

01/06/10 - Happy New Year!!

2010 seems to be starting at roaring pace with a handful of new films and several other projects all kicking off at once.

On deck first is Brian Schmidt's fun family film The Adventures of Jojo as well as Robert Celestino's dark thriller Leave.

A more detailed update is coming soon. Also a general site revamp is around the corner ....

12/01/09 - Happy Thanksgiving!

Recording and mixing has just been completed on Michael Weithorn's fantastic film A Little Help. The score, a rather eclectic mix of introspective electric guitar solos and larger more rock-driven cues, is complimented by a trio of terrific original songs by Jakob Dylan. I also wrote an original song, in collaboration with the immensely talented Celeigh Chapman. Keep an eye out for the film this coming year.

I'm also happy to report that my single "Khor" is being released this week on iTunes, following a release on AmazonMp3, Rhapsody, Napster, etc. "Khor" was co-written with vocalist Areni Agbabian, and the fantastic album cover was designed by Stephanie Pereida.

Also keep an eye open for "Sounds of Darkness," coming out very soon. This is my first-ever meditation album, built around the sacred chants and poems of Aztec leader and medicine man Miktlan Ehekateotl Kuahtlinxan. The album coincides with the release of "Darkness," a book by Shaahin Cheyenne about Ehe's teachings and philosophies.

Meanwhile work continues on a few other film and game projects, and several new concert commissions, the details of which will be posted later.

09/26/09 - I'm very happy to say Grace has just come out on DVD and BluRay. The discs are loaded with fantastic bonuses, including a rather detailed 'Behind the Scenes' about my score. On October 8th the Society of Composers and Lyrcists will host a special screening for their members, featuring Q&A with director Paul Solet and I.

Several new, very exciting projects are coming up. Details will be posted about them soon ...

08/27/09 - I'm thrilled to announce that my score to Captain Abu Raed is now available for purchase from BSX Records! The album was beautifully prepared by Executive Producers Ford Thaxton and Mark Banning. The album comprises the complete score the film, and also contains wonderful liner notes composed by the film's director, Amin Matalqa.

In light of that release, it seemed appropriate to add a new section to the website: The Discography. Soundtracks coming soon in addition to those listed include Paul Solet's Grace, now on BluRay (and DVD Sept. 15th), and ThatGameCompany's Playstation3 hit flOw.

Furthermore check local listings as Captain Abu Raed continues its nationwide theatrical release!

08/13/09 - Two theatrical openings the same week!

Captain Abu Raed, after opening in several US cities is now opening at NYC's famed Angelika movie theater tomorrow, August 14th! Writer/director Amin Matalqa will be on-hand to do Q&A's following the last two showings Friday and Saturday. If you're in New York, don't miss this beautiful film!

As if that weren't enough, Paul Solet's fantastic psychological horror Grace is opening in both New York (Village East Cinema) and Los Angeles (Laemmle Sunset 5) that same night!! Director Paul Solet, producer Adam Green, and star Jordan Ladd will all be on-hand for Q&A's for the last two showings!

Other than that great news, several new projects are underway which I'll post about soon. In the meantime I've added a few recent scores to the "Listen" page ...

05/09/09 - Lots going on!

First off, the long-awaited theatrical release for Amin Matalqa's Captain Abu Raed is finally upon us! In July the film will open in Seattle, San Francisco, Berkley and Denver, followed in June/August by New York City, Washington DC, Detroit, Dearborn and Boston. Many other cities will opening around that time as well, with specific announcements forthcoming. A huge thank you, as always, to NeoClassics Films for believe in our labor of love. BSX Records will be releasing the soundtrack this coming June!

Also, Paul Solet's fantastically unnerving psychological horror Grace had a phenomenal opening at Sundance in January and has been lighting up the festival circuit ever since. A release date has not yet been announced, but the film be hitting theaters later this year! The teaser trailer has been added below.

Knuckle Draggers, the absolutely wonderful comedy directed by Alex Ranarivelo has recently had its world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival, with several more screenings on the way. Following that the film be released, with details to be announced later. The official trailer has been posted below.

Also, I've done lots of recent interviews, primarily surrounding Grace, all of which have been added to the Press page.

03/09/09 - Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and a whole bunch of others! This update is something like 3 months past-due ...

2009 has begun very well. Grace, which was scored during the summer of 2008, premiered to great acclaim at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. In fact, 2 people actually fainted at our premiere! The film has gone on to win the Jury Prize at France's prestigious Gerardmer Film Festival and will be coming soon to SXSW in Texas.

Meanwhile, Captain Abu Raed will be released theatrically this coming May! The soundtrack will be available soon....

More updates soon ... promise!!

11/27/08 - Happy Thanksgiving!

Just a quick update - I'm very proud to say that I was a winner last week at the first annual Hollywood Music Awards for 'Best New Composer,' for my score to Amin Matalqa's Captain Abu Raed.

Also, Soundtrack.net has just run a great, in-depth interview with me covering Captain Abu Raed, flOw and others, including a few exlusive audio clips from the upcoming psychological horror film Grace!

More updates to come soon after the holidays!

10/29/08 - Another severely overdue update! It was exactly one year ago today that I completed the orchestra scoring sessions to Captain Abu Raed. The film has been gathering steam and has thus far earned 16 festival awards from screenings in over 30 countries. In addition to the coveted Audience Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival, the film recently won the Heartland Film Festival Grand Prize, which is the largest cash prize for an festival in the country ($100,000). Also the Audience Award was snagged there.

Starting Nov. 7 the Captain Abu Raed will be screening in Los Angeles for one week at the Laemlle Music Hall on Wilshire Blvd.

In other news, the score and songs from last year's Back Soon are now available on iTunes, AmazonMP3, eMusic, and other online retailers. Check it out!

Meanwhile I completed the score to Paul Solet's terrific feature Grace, which culminated in a recording session at Abbey Road Studios. Photos can be found here.

Now I am completing the scores to Ashley Beyer's Print and Alex Ranarivelo's Knuckle Draggers. Soon to come are Olivier Bernier's The Sunset Sky, and Rob Williams' Make the Yuletide Gay.

06/14/08 - Grace, the intense psychological drama / horror film written and directed by Paul Solet is now in post! Initial scoring has begun and will continue through the forthcoming weeks. The film is beautifully shot by DP Zoran Popovic, and is looking to have a fun and unconvential score.

Meanwhile the score to Jay Woelfel and Mark Terry's Live Evil is done. The final score consists of nearly 80 minutes of orchestral score featuring some fun action-packed set pieces and loads of creepy vampire music. Infinite thanks to Lisbeth Scott who proved to be, yet again, and invaluable creative counterpart.

And as a fun side note, my very first album "Spirit of the Cosmos," (first pressed in 2005) is now available for download on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and all other major online retailers. The music is all orchestral (me conducting the Utah Symphony), and is a continuous homage to my film music heroes from childhood. The download page can be found here.

04/28/08 - Wow! Way overdue for an update!

March saw the successful release of The Acquirer: Episode I at Cinsay.com, with Episodes II and III on their way! The soundtrack will be available soon!

Work is nearly complete on Hubristic, written and directed by Dan Dominguez, and Live Evil, directed Jay Woelfel. For Live Evil I've had the great pleasure to reunite with esteemed vocalist Lisbeth Scott (with whom I previously worked on Captain Abu Raed). Clips from the score will available soon here.

Up next will be Paul Solet's psychological horror film Grace, starring Jordan Ladd and currently in production. I've already begun writing music for the film, though the full-fledged scoring will take place in probably another 6 weeks or so.

02/13/08 - Captain Abu Raed is officially out in theaters in Jordan, soon to spread to the outlying Middle Eastern countries! On February 5th the film had its world theatrical premiere in Amman, attended by Jordan's Queen Rania and other members of the Royal Family, the film's local investors and just about all members of the cast and crew! It was a blast. Check the photos page for some new snippets from both that, and the Sundance screenings. The film is currently in final negotiations for worldwide theatrical release, including the US.

IndieWire's Eric Kohn wrote: Because it combines an airport setting with heavy sentimentalism, "Captain Abu Raed" suggests a foreign version of "The Terminal," but writer-director Amin Matalqa brings a steady approach to the material that allows it to surpass that notorious Steven Spielberg misfire. With a gorgeous score and subtle performances all around, it introduces Capra-esque pathos to fresh terrain.

After wrapping up some last touches on Patrick Epino's Mr. Sadman, I'm now moving on to Live Evil, directed by Jay Woelfel.

Also a few new photos have been uploaded!

01/31/08 - Captain Abu Raed won the Audience Choice Award at Sundance!! Congratulations Amin, David and everyone else!

Hollywood Reporter's Stephen Farber said this: "[Director Amin] Matalqa has crafted a stirring tribute to the invisible people in our world who may end up changing our lives more profoundly than high-profile leaders. Nothing is more difficult than making an honest film about a good man, but Captain Abu Raed accomplishes the feat."

Variety's Todd McCarthy had this little snippet to say about the score: "Lensing by German d.p. Reinhart Peschke boosts the tale's different moods, while Yank composer Austin Wintory's sweeping orchestral score continually ups the emotional ante."

Now I'm off to Jordan for our January 5th Premiere - check back soon for some photos and audio clips!

01/03/08 - Happy New Year!!

Captain Abu Raed continues its march foward! The film recently completed its successful premiere at the Dubai International Film Festival where, among overwhelmingly positive audience and critical reception, it also snagged the award for Best Actor. Congratulations to Nadim Sawalha! Next up is Sundance! On January 6th the film will release theatrically in Jordan. Soon a few audio and video clips will be posted from the finished film, available on the Listen page.

Meanwhile '08 promises a very fun lineup of new projects. First up will be the finishing touches on Patrick Epino's comedy Mr. Sadman. Immediately following will be two more comedies: Hubristic, and 3-Day Weekend, two horror films: Live Evil and Grace, and an action/drama: TK's Corner.

I'm also proud to announce that flOw was awarded 'Best Artistic Design' by IGN in their year-end PlayStation3 roundup, and was named in the top 10 Design Innovations of 2007 by Next-Gen. Congratulations to ThatGameCompany!

12/02/07 - I'm off to Amman and Dubai for the world premiere of Captain Abu Raed! First up is a pair of back-to-back screenings at the Dubai Film Festival. Following that, it has just been announced that Captain Abu Raed will be screening at Sundance!

Following the return from Dubai I'll be completing a trio of features: Mr. Sadman, 3-Day Weekend, and Hubristic. More details on those coming soon!

11/02/07 - Captain Abu Raed has successfully been completed! Following about 3 weeks of meetings and composing, the score was recorded at Warner Brothers, featuring the Hollywood Studio Symphony, on October 27th and 29th.

Jointly orchestrated by me and my repeat-collaborator Christopher Thomas (recently 1st runner-up at the Film and TV Music Awards for 'Best Orchestrator'), contracted by Peter Rotter and Sandra Kipp, and engineered by Damon Tedesco, the score turned out fantastically! The film is currently in the final stages of audio post. Sound clips, trailers, etc will be posted soon! Check now for photos from the scoring process.

I'm also happy to announce that my previous film for Abu Raed's director Amin Matalqa, won 'Best Score' at the 1st annual Film and TV Music Awards.

Next up: A great new comedy from director Patrick Epino titled Mr. Sadman, to be followed by another movie by Back Soon director Rob Williams.

10/02/07 - So far, the fall is kicking ass! At the very end of September I got word from PGB director Amin Matalqa that I was being offered the opportunity to score his latest masterpiece, the indie feature Captain Abu Raed, shot entirely in the Middle Eastern nation of Jordan (the first movie to ever be made there). The score is set to record the last week of October with the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

Following just a few days behind that I found out that my work on Sony PS3's flOw had snagged a British Academy Award nomination! Not a week after that announcement, word came from the newly-formed Academy of Film and TV Music Awards that my scores to Rob Williams' Back Soon, and Amin Matalqa's last AFI film, Morning Latte had earned Best Original Score nominations.

And as pre-emptive icing on the cake, one day before this craziness had all began, I bought a Prius ...

As a final note, check out the video directly below from my regular Can We Do That? collaborator Cory Tyler. Gratitube is his newest creation, and if you're just wanting to see something that makes you happy, watch this!

09/12/07 - The final touches are complete on the two indie feature films If You Could Have directed by Kimberli Zou and produced by The Orb Productions, and Serpent and the Sun directed by Shaahin Cheyene, produced by Victory Films. Composing will begin soon for Mr. Sadman, a comedy directed by Patrick Epino and produced by Empire and Sleep Productions.

Work begun on a new PlayStation3 title for Sony American, an expansion to the acclaimed PSN title flOw. Due out soon, this expansion brings a new campaign to the game featuring new creatures and a new playable character. Since its release in February, flOw has dominated sales on PlayStation Network, to date the highest selling PSN title, and is currently available in all major territories worldwide.

Also at various stages in completing several new shorts: Missing Pieces, directed by Samah Tokmachi and starring Rainn Wilson; Disarmed directed by Justin Dittrich and starring James Kyson Lee; Caldera directed by Doug Spice; and The Procedure directed by Sergio Pinherio.

07/22/07 - Apologies for a severely overdue update! Work has been completed on a whole barrage of projects over the last several months. Replay, developed by Take Action Games, was completed and has successfully launched. In addition, the score was recently completed to Amin Matalqa's terrific comedy short Morning Latte. The film is due to screen several times this year, including at the ArcLite Cinemas in Hollywood. The absurdly grand, epic score (about a coffee shop employee and his Satan-ish boss) was recorded at Capitol Records.

In addition, work is also well underway on the beautiful feature documentary Serpent and the Sun, directed by Shaahin Cheyene.

07/16/07 - Work recently begun on a handful of new projects. GroundTruth, a video game title being developed by the Sandia National Labratory, plus several other indepedent video games, a new few shorts and two new features. More details to be posted soon.

Also, congratulations to director Rob Williams for two nominations, Best Feature Drama and Best Writing/Story, at the Hollywood HD Fest for Back Soon!

Also, congratulations to Luke Pebler: The Professor's Daughter recently won a slew of awards at the venerable Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival, including Best Short and Most Creative Short.

The indie feature Back Soon will be screening at the Hollywood HD Film Festival on Wednesday March 28th at 3:30 pm. Check out the site for the new trailer.

02/20/07 - FlOw for PlayStation3 is due out next week! The official site can be found here, as well as Sony's page here. The game is looking to be one of the more anticipated PlayStation3 games to be coming out in the first quarter of '07! The coverage on GameSpot currently ranks the game as 8 of 36, 310 titles, and #1 of titles for the PS3. The first review, courtesy of Kotaku, is fantastic and can be found here.

Meanwhile, Back Soon completed its scoring Sunday February 11th. The score was recorded with the Hollywood Studio Symphony, featuring cellist Steve Erdody in a number of the cues. Everything was recorded at Capitol Records - photos posted in the gallery! Back Soon will be making its world premiere at the Hollywood HD/DV festival on Wednesday, March 28th. Details available here. A soundtrack release should be forthcoming.

Also, congratulations to director Luke Pebler. The Professor's Daughter has already been accepted into the famous Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival, as well as the Wisconsin Int'l Film Festival!

02/04/07 - Many projects culminating all at once! FlOw is nearing its launch date on the PlayStation3 and PR associated with that is beginning to pop up: Click here for a recent interview with the popular video game news blog Jay is Games and click here for for the official FlOw trailers from Sony (or just watch it here!).
