The Jump
By Stella ChangThis project represented my third collaboration with Stella, and in keeping with the first two, it was radically different than its predecessors, and wholy unlike any film I'd ever scored. The piece itself is an expressionist exploration of suicide; images of a twisting, tortured man writhing about in a rain gutter are intercut with visual silence, and what results is an incredibly tumultuous film. For the score, my approach was to attack the primal nature, taking my cue primarily from the movements of the man himself. Martial percussion, electronic effects and tape loops of various rain recordings became my basis. I discovered my passion for inventing electronic soundscapes on this project, and it was also my first experiment with 'musique concret' (the use of pre-recorded sounds with live music).
